As many of you know, we've recently joined the Go2Net Network. We've also been working on several new services to make Dogpile bigger and better than ever for our loyal users. These changes have prompted us to completely redesign Dogpile.
We've tried our best to keep Dogpile's look and feel intact while integrating powerful, intelligent new services and reflecting our new corporate identity. For instance, a click on our new Go2Net navigation bar gives you instant access to the wide variety of great sites and services comprising the Go2Net Network, including the recently relaunched Silicon Investor.
We believe that we've done a good job of making our new services as
intuitive and easy to use as possible. However, we realize that with any new
service, there are bound to be a few questions. What follows is a brief
overview of how to get the most out of our site, but feel free to contact us
with further questions, suggestions, bugs or feedback at:

You may also use quotes and parentheses. However, note that not all search
engines support their use. For those that do not support their use, they
will be automatically removed.
If Arfie does not get at least 10 documents matching your query,
it will automatically move to the next
three and so on until all are searched or until 10 matches are found.
If Arfie does find 10 or more matches you still can go to the next
set of search engines by pressing on the
"Next Set of Search Engines" button at the bottom of the page.
Since Arfie automatically fetches more documents from larger databases
when less than ten are found, you can put in as
much or as little detail about what it is you want to find and not be disappointed with too few matches.

We continuously survey all primary COM, ORG, EDU, NET and GOV Web servers
and distill their contents to produce this database. This is an index of
sites, not pages. It is very good at finding companies and organizations by
purpose, product, subject matter or location. However, it is not designed to
find esoteric information on individual Web pages. Instead, this engine
attempts to focus on the quality of answers, not the quantity.

Dogpile Metasearch General Information
The Dogpile metasearch interface takes a single query and processes it so that you will get the maximum
benefit from your search. We currently support many of the webs most popular search tools. They are:
What is Allowed?
The easiest and often the best search is to just enter the keywords for the
page you wish to find and press "FETCH".
What will Happen when I Press "Fetch"
Arfie searches three search engines at a time. The requests
are made in parallel and are displayed as
they come back.
You will be directed to search results for the search option you chose. More search options may be available on these pages.
We now offer several ways to get focused results, limited to a specific
geographic area. The first time you use one of our geographic services, you
will be prompted to enter your default location information either by city
and state and/or by ZIP Code. Your browser must allow cookies for this
information to be correctly saved. After this information is saved, you
won't have to enter your local information again. Your search results from
any of our geographic search services will focus on your default
geographical area first.
You can override this at any time by adding city and state or ZIP Code
information to your search string. For example: To search the Yellow Pages
for an auto mechanic outside your default area, type in "auto mechanics,
boston, ma", click on the Yellow Pages radio button and press the Fetch
button. Your search will yield results for auto mechanics in the Boston,
Mass. area. You can also search with just city or state information to get
matches from other cities or an entire state, as long as they are separated
by commas. For example: The string "florists, jackson" will yield results
for florists from all U.S. cities named Jackson.
You can change your default geographic settings at any time by clicking the
Change City link under the Dogpile search categories. These new services
make our already-powerful Metasearch services even more relevant, friendly
and useful to our users.

Our Web robot is dispatched to each site to obtain their Web pages. Then,
each site's pages are examined as a whole to determine the principal subject
matter areas that would best characterize the entire site. Additions and
updates are performed at the rate of about 100 sites per minute. In October
1998 more than 350 gigabytes of content was represented in this database.
The growth rate is about 25,000 newly discovered sites per week.
After a site's content has been acquired, it is passed to our Automated
Categorization Engine. This process seeks to identify the general
classifications under which a site belongs. The % figure that follows a
site's category indicates the degree of confidence that the categorization
engine had in its answer. While this technology is not 100-percent accurate,
it is extremely impressive and does perform a task that would otherwise
require 75-80 people to accomplish. Each site is assigned up to four
categories, but our search interface currently only displays the best one.

Six machines support this service. One machine supports the Webinator and
Categorizer, one supports the news service, and the other four conduct
Web-site searches. Each of the search machines can sustain about 1,000
queries per minute. All machines were purchased from Microway for about $10K
apiece (without disks). Each machine has 1gigabyte of RAM and a large number
of 9-gigabyte Seagate Cheetah disk drives on multiple Ultra-SCSI
controllers.
This is one of several exceptional search engines produced by Thunderstone's
R&D group, and hosted by Dogpile. We are very pleased with the quality of
the search results and expect that you will be as well.

The Dogpile Newscrawler is an intelligent news search that crawls across the
Net, constantly updating its content with the latest stories from around the
world. Use the Newscrawler by typing in your search terms, clicking the
Newscrawler radio button and then clicking the Fetch button. The Dogpile
Newscrawler checks many known online news media sources and returns current
matches to your query. That's it! Very simple, yet very powerful.

Use the Yellow Pages by typing in your search terms, clicking the Yellow
pages radio button and then clicking the Fetch button. Unless you specify
otherwise by adding a comma and then city, state and/or ZIP
Code, results
are returned based on your default geographical location. (e.g., The search
string "hardware stores" will bring business listings from your region,
while the search string "hardware stores, san francisco, ca" or "hardware
stores, 94123" will bring results from hardware stores in the San Francisco,
CA area. Remember, the comma between the search term and the
city, state or zip code is necessary for overriding your default
geographical location

Use the White Pages by typing in your search terms, clicking the White pages
radio button and then clicking the Fetch button. Unless you specify
otherwise by adding a comma and then city, state or ZIP Code, results are
returned based on your default geographical location. (e.g., the search
string "john smith" will bring personal listings from your default area.
while the search string "john smith,jackson,wy" or "john smith,
83001" will
bring results from the Jackson, Wyoming area.

Clicking the Weather link brings you your local weather forecast.
However, you can override this by typing in City, State
or ZIP Code, clicking the Weather radio button and then clicking the Fetch button.
(e.g., The search string boulder, co or 80308 will bring a weather forecast from the Boulder, CO area.

Clicking the Maps link brings you your default city map. Entering in an address will display a map of that address in you City.
If you would like to get a map for a different city, you can override your default city by typing in City, State or ZIP Code
or the Address, a comma and then the City, State and/or Zip
Code.
(e.g., The search string 123 Main st would find that address in your town while
123 Main st, Macon, Ga would override your town in favor of Main street in Macon, GA and macon, ga or 31201 will bring up a map for the Macon, GA area.
